Discussion

The spit was excavated (shovel-scraped then trowelled) in order to define the features in the centre of the dry valley. The material removed varied from a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/2) in the west to a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) in the east, with 10% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal flecking were observed in several locations. Although some features in the area (including Grubenhaus 012AD08045), was defined, another spit (012AD00667) was necessary in the southern half of the area, to define the sequence of east-west aligned enclosure ditches..
